The Pocono Mountains in northeast Pennsylvania are home to numerous ski resorts easily accessible to both the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Resorts such as Jack Frost Big Boulder have been operating for more than 50 years and offer amenities and services -- beyond their sporting facilities -- tailored specifically for family guests, including on-site or nearby accommodations, sporting activities and instruction for visitors of all ages, and family discounts and packages.

Family Accommodations

99: The Barclay Family Ski Vacation Packages

Family accommodations are available on-site or close to Pocono area ski resorts. Guests traveling with children often prefer lodging with kitchen facilities, like the condo rentals offered by Shawnee Village Resort and Countryside Housekeeping Cottages. Others opt for a traditional hotel, inn or bed and breakfast setting -- all located within a few miles of any Poconos ski area. You should confirm amenity details with each establishment, but most include cable television, coffeemakers and Ski and Stay packages.

Winter Sports

Ski

Pocono ski resorts are perhaps best known for their alpine skiing facilities. However, as snowboarding and freestyle sports have become more popular, resorts have added facilities for these winter sports as well. Families will find slopes available for skiers of all ages and beginner through expert levels. In recent years, numerous resorts in the Poconos have also added snow tubing. Many families with little ones opt for this gentler ride down the mountain, particularly as no special equipment is required.

Instructional Programs

Instructional ski and snowboarding programs are also offered by all Pocono ski resorts, including private and group classes for preschool-aged children through adults of all abilities. Some offer beginner instruction for children under 3 years old in “SKIBaby” and “Mommy and Me” programs. Other Pocono resorts offer after-school skiing programs for local children, as well as “Just for Kids” supervised weekend skiing and snowboarding activities.

Family Discounts and Special Offers

The cost of winter sports can be expensive; thus, many families appreciate the discounts offered by Pocono ski resorts for younger skiers. Children under 6 ski for free at most resorts when accompanied by a skiing adult. In addition, resorts typically offer lift tickets and lessons for those under 19 at a 10 to 20 percent discount off the adult price. Daycare centers are provided by some resorts; check with each ski resort for availability and need for reservations. Also ask about family deals and events. Some resorts sponsor discounted family days, and others host events like Blue Mountain's New Year's Eve Family Fun Party.

Offseason Activities

Although best-known for winter sports, Pocono ski resorts offer four-season activity calendars. During the off season, many resorts open for hiking, golfing and mountain biking, and others like Sno Mountain's Sno Cove and Camelback's Camel Beach open swimming pools and water parks during the summer. Resorts also host concerts and arts shows, as well as specialty events like the Garlic Festival, Rodeo and Chili Cookoff and the Autumn Timber Festival.
